Men buy over $4.1 billion in skin care each year — and body care and facial care products have experienced the most significant increase, with sales gains of 57% since 2009, making it one of the fastest-growing segments of the skin care industry (1). Though once considered “girly” or “effeminate,” men’s skin care is now being perceived by men as a way to instantly “upgrade” or maintain their appearance. And in a population that will have more people over 50 than under 50, that’s important.
But here are five dirty secrets about the men’s skin care industry:
1.) Men’s skin ages more slowly than women’s — but most skin care companies won’t tell you that.
DHEA is a testosterone precursor found in higher levels in men than women. In numerous studies, it has been found that DHEA may help build collagen and prevent the breakdown of collagen by matrix metalloproteinases (2). In one study (2), when DHEA was applied to skin cells in culture (in vitro), collagen production was stimulated, and existing collagen was better-maintained.
It’s well-accepted in dermatology that men’s skin will age more slowly than women’s — and DHEA is one reason why.
2.) Other than aging more slowly, men’s skin is not all that different from women’s skin.
On the other hand, other than DHEA helping to preserve collagen, there really aren’t that many differences between a man’s skin and a woman’s skin. Skin disorders like rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and acne tend to occur in families, regardless of gender. And that means the same ingredients tend to work on men as for women. The classics that do wonders for the skin like amino acids, sunscreen, retinyl palmitate and Albizia julibrissin work every bit as well on men’s skin as women’s!
Again, other than DHEA, there tends to be very little difference in physiology between how a man’s skin reacts to ingredients and a woman’s.
3.) Products are often EXACTLY the same as in the women’s industry — but cheaper.
Cosmetic chemists aren’t dumb. They know how ingredients work, and how the skin reacts to ingredients. So when it comes to formulating a “new” product for men, they understand that the same ingredients that fight fine lines, diminish wrinkles, eliminate age spots, and firm up a woman’s skin will also do the same thing for a man! As a result, you have a lot of men thinking that they need their own special products, when in fact they’re buying the same thing their wife is using, except with dark, square-cornered packaging and a more masculine-looking label.
On the other hand, most men don’t want to spend as much as women do on skin care. (One study showed that women spend more on beauty products and treatments each month than they do on car payments!) As a result, men’s skin care tends to be cheaper, sold in larger sizes, and built as a purchase meant to last more than 30 days.
4.) Shaving helps men’s skin care work better.
One reason why people perceive men’s skin to be significantly different from women’s is because men have better exfoliation habits! Daily facial shaving sloughs off dried skin cells from the epidermis, the upper layer of the skin, resulting in enhanced rates of cell turnover, increased skin brightness, as well as a smoother surface for application of sunscreen and moisturizers.
Since the absorption and penetration of key ingredients into the skin plays a role in how well skin care works, it makes sense that people believe men’s skin care works better. But it’s simply not true: It’s just the exfoliation that enables the skin care to work better!
5.) One of the only products out there designed for TUFF men: HEFF Man!
There is no doubt that the active, rugged, “tuff” man beats up his skin on a regular basis. Exposure to extreme weather and hard physical activity often results in split, cracked skin and dry patches on the hands, feet, elbows and knees.
In addition, the skin can become leathery and dry all over. However, men have an aversion to the typical skin moisturizers that are greasy, smell flowery and are simply not “manly” enough to get the job done.
The typical girly skin care product is NOT going to work on “tuff” men’s skin. That’s why we created HEFF MAN. A head-to-toe lotion so tough it’s used and approved by U.S. Special Forces, HEFF MAN is for full body use every day, non-greasy HEFF MAN eliminates split, cracked and dry skin anywhere on the body.
The pharmaceutical-grade, amino acid-rich lotion not only tackles everyday problems like dry flaky skin, but offers complete relief from more severe problems like psoriasis, cuts, bites, itchy irritations and rashes.
