Argireline, also known as acetyl hexapeptide-8, is often used as a muscle relaxer. It is a shortened peptide sequence of BotoxTM that is able to be used over-the-counter in skin care creams.
Argireline blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. The affected muscle can no longer contract, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. Though acetyl hexapeptide-3 temporarily inhibits the neurotransmitter neuroepinephrine (like Botox does), the effects of topically-applied acetyl hexapeptide-3 are temporary. It is not likely to last more than 8 hours at a time.
A study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science showed a 10% concentration of topically-applied acetyl hexapeptide-3 (argireline) reduces wrinkles by 30% over a 30-day period. When injected into the skin, a 2002 study found the same reduction of 30% in wrinkles, similar to BotoxTM.
Alpha Lipoic Acid
Alpha lipoic acid is an antioxidant that has been shown to have effects on many of the most widely-reported signs of aging, including fine lines, wrinkles, and skin roughness. A 5% lipoic acid cream tested on 33 women for 12 weeks found that their fine lines were reduced, and their skin smoothness was significantly increased (British Journal of Dermatology).
Alpha lipoic acid is also beneficial when used in conjunction with vitamin E. Vitamin E is able to be regenerated when used in conjunction with alpha lipoic acid (Packer et. al., 1999; Cosmetic Dermatology, 2010).
Hyaluronic acid is like the ant of skin care. Like ants that are able to lift thousands of times their weight, hyaluronic acid is able to bind moisture in up to 1,000 times its own weight when topically applied to the skin (Skin Pharmacology and Physiology, 2004).
Hyaluronic acid also helps for the skin to heal after injury (American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, 2005; Biologicals
Glucosamine has been proven to treat hyperpigmentation, like age spots, melasma, and general skin discoloration (Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2006). Its effects are significant in hydrating skin as well, as glucosamine is a precursor to hyaluronic acid that has been shown to increase hyaluronic acid production in the skin after regular topical application (Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2006). It has a very high safety profile.
Vitamin E is naturally found in the skin as an antioxidant and hydrator. As you age, your skin’s stores of vitamin E become increasingly more depleted (Skin Pharmacology and Physiology).
Vitamin E supplementation in the skin has been shown to increase skin hydration, antioxidant stores, and to improve the overall look and feel of the skin.
