One study published in Cell Press investigated the use of three amino acids in particular–leucine, isoleucine, and valine–on the lifespans of mice . These are three of the 20 branched-chain amino acids that are involved in the biosynthesis of proteins.
To test this theory that amino acid supplements could have a positive impact on lifespan, researchers divided middle-aged male mice into two groups. One group was given water supplemented with the amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine, and the other group was given plain water. Otherwise, both groups of mice were in identical living conditions and similar initial health.
After several months, the study found that the mice who had been drinking the water supplemented with amino acids lived 12 percent longer than the control group of mice. The mice with amino-acid-fortified diets had a significantly larger amount of mitochondria in their skeletal and muscular systems, as well as increased defence systems against the oxidative stress caused by free radical damage. Moreover, researchers noted that the mice treated with amino acids showed improvements in physical endurance and motor coordination, whereas the control group did not.
Researchers plan to perform a second similar study using female mice instead of males to continue to test this theory. However, the results of this study show promising evidence that humans may be able to enjoy longer, healthier lives by adding an amino acid supplement to their diets.
