Valine is an amino acid with significant effects in skin care.
People often talk about putting proteins in skin care, like collagen, elastin, and fibrin. However, these proteins need to broken down into amino acids in order for your skin to be able to use them. It’s like trying to bake a cake from an existing cake: It doesn’t work. You need the components, the eggs, the butter, the flour, just like your skin needs the amino acids.
Valine is one amino acid in skin care with significant results.
Like all amino acids, valine is naturally found in the skin at higher concentrations when you are younger. As you age, your body naturally produces and retains far fewer amino acids. The result? Let’s go back to the cake analogy: If you didn’t have enough ingredients, you would bake far fewer cakes — or cakes that were very thin and flimsy. Similarly, if you didn’t have enough amino acids, your skin produces less protein — or very thin and flimsy collagen!
Studies show that valine metabolism normally occurs in healthy skin cells (Biochimica et Biophysica Acta), indicating that valine is necessary for normal skin function. Valine is also present in higher levels in stronger, less sun-damaged skin (Nature) and less dry skin (Journal of Investigative Dermatology).
Topically applying skin care the amino acid valine should provide your skin with more strength and resilience, as well as more supplies it needs to produce optimal levels of collagen and elastin and other structural proteins within your skin.
